REVIEW: THE SCORCH TRIALS by James Dashner

The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, #2)

Read the second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series that is soon to be a motion picture, hitting theaters September 18, 2015, and is perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent.

Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end.

Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch.

There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die.

The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.

Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off.

There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive.

Genre: Young Adult

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars!

Review:

WOW! This book was just….

Okay, so Scorch Trials picks up right where Maze Runner left us…and it is a total jump from book one.

Maze Runner is contained…it’s a mystery, but it’s small. In Scorch everything blows up!! This book is a whole new world of crazy, and our Gladers have so much more to face.

I absolutely LOVE Thomas and Minho…these guys are incredible and I was cheering for them so hard through this book.

“Shuck it,” Minho responded. “I’m tougher than nails. I could still kick your pony-lovin’ butt with twice this pain.”
Thomas shrugged. “I do love ponies. Wish I could eat one right now.”

It did lag a little for me…there was a lot of walking and sleeping and walking and sleeping and then more walking. But I was so damn desperate for information, for what was going to happen next that it was easy to keep turning the page.

I really love Thomas and being inside his head. I like that he seems so HUMAN. He is a total badass, but he’s still believable as this soft hearted kind of hero. He struggles internally with everything that happens.

“He didn't care about the others anymore. The chaos around him seemed to siphon away his humanity, turn him into an animal. All he wanted was to survive, make it to that building, get inside. Live. Gain another day.”

He fights to protect his friends, but also has that very basic survival instinct, that he has to keep HIMSELF alive. He values the few strong friendships he has, but he values his own life as well and doesn’t try to play the martyr and save everyone. He knows this world is ugly, and he stuck in a race that not everyone will finish. He has his loyalties, but he’s slow to trust, which is smart and understandable. He is just all around one of my favorite characters. It’s tough to see his drive broken down throughout the story, his will so string in the begging begins to fade with all the hardships he faces, and it really makes your heart go out to him. To them all.

“Sometimes I wonder," Thomas murmured.
"Wonder what?"
"If being alive matters. If being dead might be a lot easier.”

I had a big issue with Teresa’s “betrayal”. In this book, each Glader is tattooed with a “role”. Teresa is the BETRAYER. It’s obvious these roles play a key part in WICKED’s “killzone” plans, but it doesn’t fit for me. I think…personally…what she did and WHY she did it, is a forgivable offense. It was WRONG, and hurtful and just a really messed up situation, but I think in Thomas’s place I could have forgave that….I’d be pissed sure…I don’t know maybe it’s just me. All that build up, I was just expecting something much more brutal and devious and…UNFORGIVING. Like on a deathly type of scale, so when it finally happened, it just felt anti-climactic.  I had to question like, “Wait…was that it? Was THAT the betrayal?”

“The betrayal meant he couldn't trust her anymore, and his heart told him he couldn't forgive her.”

Other than that this book was great, the Cranks are a scary-ass edition the world of WICKED and I was so entranced in their journey…I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next!

** I went to see The Scorch Trials premier last night and WHAT?!?!? The book goes left, the movie made a sharp right….The plot is VERY LOOSELY based on the book but most of the detail and dialogue have been changed completely. I mean COMPLETELY, it should have been titled The Scorch ESCAPE! That’s not to say it wasn’t good, because it was GREAT, and action packed, but for true fans of the book, you have been officially warned!! Also…Dylan is beautiful as always.**
