Review + Giveaway (5 copies!!!): FLAME IN THE MIST by Renée Ahdieh

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor's favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family's standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she's quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she's ever known.

"The only power any man has over you is the power you give him."

Wow. Just... wow.

This year has been a huge reading slump. I've started and stopped a few books (which I have never done before), and there has only been a handful all year that has kept my attention.

Flame in the Mist did NOT disappoint.

Give me any Disney influenced book and I'll be sure to put it on my TBR list.
This was specifically, was influenced by Mulan and 47 Ronin, Japanese inspired culture. I already knew from the synopsis that one of the main characters (Mariko) was going to be a bad ass, head strong female. Just the way I like them to be!

This book is in a third person perspective. Mainly by Mariko, and occasionally switches over to her brother Kenshin. I loved reading through Mariko's eyes. She stole my heart instantly, and I immediately was drawn towards her character. She is such a likable and believable character, so it was easy. I found myself wanting to skip over Kenshin's chapters simply because I wanted to get back to Mariko.
I also want to mention that I thoroughly enjoyed the Black Clan as well. I want to be able to tell you so much about these characters, but I'm a fan of leaving it as some what as a mystery, and let it come to you as you read. BUT, I will say that I added a few more to my book boyfriend list. *swoons*

A few things I really enjoyed about this book that sets it apart from others:
This book has romance, but it isn't the "up in your face" kind of love.
Don't get me wrong... I LOVE books with a love story. BUT, when a book has an important message, I feel that the love story should in no way over shadow that. I've seen so many books stray away from the importance of the story, and get lost behind love and I'm SO happy this didn't fall down that path.
Honestly, Renée left me wanting more (which is good!). It kept me wanting to read about Mariko and Okami's connection because it was that slow burning flame, and I was ready for it to ignite!

Details. Details. Details.
 I'm ALL for that!
The detail that Renée had written had me transported to the exact location and made me want to hop on over to to see the beauty first hand. I believe that not only should a book tell the story, it should make you envision everything when you close your eyes.

It kept me on my toes.
I will warn you. This book does start of slow, and remains slow for a while. Regardless of the pace, not once did it make me want to put it down. I applaud the author for her ability to do so, because 95% of the time I get bored. While reading Flame in the Mist, I did not. Also, the last 30% of the book.... you better have plenty of time to dedicate to, because you will not want to put it down until you are finished.

I'M SO HAPPY THIS BOOK IS A SERIES.
I'M TYPING IN CAPS SO YOU CAN REALIZE MY EXCITEMENT.

Thank you Renée, for creating an amazing book and I cannot wait to dive further in the world of what is Flame in the Mist!!
