The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

Poignant and powerful, WITHOUT MERIT explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love.

First. I want to applaud Colleen for her endless talent for writing about situations that tend to hit home. Books that really make you think and feel about life, are the kind of books that I love to read. This is probably why Colleen Hoover tends to be one of my all time favorite authors. There hasn't been one book that left me disappointed.

This was such a refreshing read, and seemingly different from all of Colleen's other books - (reminiscent of Hopeless).  Without Merit was not driven by romance, but driven on the emotional aspect of the characters and issues as well.

I won't bore you with rewording the synopsis (well, because it does an amazing job already explaining the book), but this book is about one dysfunctional family who have a lot of kinks to work out. The characters in this book are all different in their own way - complicated. flawed. unconventional. Yet, these characters compliment each other so well.
This book has been added to my favorites pile (no shock there) simply because of the characters.

I will say that this book does deal with a lot of anxiety and depression. Though it's written about darker issues, I still considered this a lighter read out of her books. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression from a very young age, I felt that the emotions in this book were realistic and very similar to things that I have gone through as someone who suffered(s) a with mental illness.

My favorite part of this book? Well, there's two parts really. The ending for me was amazing. Well, I should say HOW it ended and how it all pieced together. Pretty sure I shed a handful of happy tears and had some really good feels too. I should also mention that there's a cameo in this book that had me rolling!! I absolutely LOVED it and I had to read it over a few times because I thought it was just brilliant!

Please go pick this book up!! You won't regret it one bit.
